Wings waive Ty Conklin

After some speculation it is now official, Ty Conklin has been waived and Joey MacDonald will remain our backup goalie for the rest of the season.

Conklin will most likely take over as the #1 goalie down in Grand Rapids while Joey will give Jimmy Howard a breather once in a blue moon. Although some people were speculating whether sending Joey back down to GR would be the good move in order to keep him “Fresh”, this move makes perfect sense and for the first time in a long time I truly feel content about our goal tending situation.

Good Luck Mr. Conklin!

It is kind of sad to see Conklins time with us come to an end like this. I wasn’t too confident in him when he came during the summer due to his bad play last year but like most others I bought into the notion that it was because the Blues were crap.

I wish the best of luck for the Conkblock down in Grand Rapids and now we can all put this chapter behind us.

All-Star Rosters Released: Datsyuk, Howard get in

The NHL All-Star rosters have officially been released and Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard have made the team. Nicklas Kronwall and Henrik Zetterberg did not make the final cut, which to me is correct as neither has played good enough to make the team.

Nick Lidstrom reportedly made the team however asked the NHL if he could skip it in order to be with his family over the break. This move makes perfect sense for him and he won’t get injured by playing which also is good.

Go Jimmah!!

It is also really nice to see that Jimmy Made it despite him being left of the original ballot. He has been having a Vezina type of season and making the All-Star team is just one more step into stardom for our young goalie.

Did I just See That! Wings beat Blackhawks 3-2(OT)

Did Conklin Just Dominate the Blackhawks?? Yes he did.

Heading into the game, most Wings fans were pinning this as a blowout as a certain Ty Conklin was going to be the starting goalie. Conklin, who up until tonight hadn’t won a single game since the second game of the season led the Wings to the victory by making some key saves and stopping a penalty shot.

However, the game didn’t start in the fashion that the Wings wanted. Dave Bolland gave the Blackhawks the lead after a mere 3 minutes of the first quarter. He took a shot that ricocheted off of Lidstroms skate and rolled under Conklin. Although it wasn’t an easy shot to save, Conklin certainly could have gotten the puck and this was probably his only major mistake of the night. Patrick Sharp would then extend the Blackhawks lead on a power-play goal just a minute later. With all of the Wings players bunched around one side of the net, Sharp had an easy and clear shot lane and took advantage of the opportunity to give the Blackhawks the 2-0 lead. This goal wasn’t at all on Conklin as he had no help whatsoever from his teammates.

Good Job Conklin!

Although the Wings were down by two, they weren’t playing too bad. It just seemed that Chicago was more fired up from the beginning however, that didn’t prevent the Wings from making a comeback. Valterri Filpulla would start this comeback with a goal after 15 minutes of play in the 1st quarter. The second period would remain scoreless with both teams sharing opportunity’s.

After 7 minutes of play in the third quarter a shot skidded passed Ty Conklin and onto the goaline before Tomas Holmstrom would cover the puck up and prevent it from going into the net. By doing this he did save a goal from occurring however, he did give the Blackhakws the opportunity to give themselves a 2-goal lead on a penalty shot. Rookie Jimmy Hayes made a fairly weak penalty shot attempt that was easily covered up by Conklin.

It seemed that this energized the Wings and a couple of minutes later they managed to tie the game up after Daniel Cleary pokes a loose puck through the legs of Cory Crawford make the score 2-2. Both teams would have some small opportunity’s to then take or retake the lead however in the end the game the score was 2-2 and an overtime was needed to determine the winner.

3 minutes into Pavel Datsyuk would shoot the puck into a wide open Chicago net and give the Wings the win, 3-2.

This game also had some big division implications as we now are exactly half way through the season, Detroit, St. Louis, and Chicago all have 53 points to have a tied lead in the Central Division, and the Nashville Predators are only a few points behind.

The Wings played really well in this and so did Ty Conklin. He has definitely earned himself another game as the Wings backup although I still want us to see if we can get a guy like Nabakov.

Next up for the Wings is the Islanders on Tuesday.

Wings vs Avs Preview: Let the Conkblocking Begin!

Tonight at 8 pm the Wings will take on the Colorado Avalanche in Denver in order to extend their winning streak to 8 games. However, unlike the previous 17 games Jimmy Howard won’t be starting, instead, Ty Conklin will get his 4th start of the season against the team he posted a shutout against in the Wings second game of the season.

Can Conklin lead the Wings to yet another victory?

Expected Lineup

Johan Franzen — Pavel Datsyuk — Todd Bertuzzi

Valtteri Filppula — Henrik Zetterberg — Jiri Hudler

Danny Cleary — Darren Helm — Chris Conner

Drew Miller — Justin Abdelkader — Tomas Holmstrom

Nicklas Lidstrom — Ian White

Niklas Kronwall — Jonathan Ericsson

Brad Stuart — Jakub Kindl

Ty Conklin

Scratches

Mike Commodore, Cory Emmerton, Jimmy Howard, Jan Mursak, Patrick Eaves

Connor gets his second start of the season as Emmerton is scratched yet again.

Prediction

I am expecting the Wings to win this game with or without Jimmy Howard. The Avalanche are 19th in goals per game and 20th in goals against per game. It won’t be easy and I could see the Avs putting one or two past us however I still think we edge out the victory 3-1 after goals by Hudler, Lidstrom, and Zetterberg(Franzen gets the assist).

Go Wings and Lions!
